MALAYSIA’S ISLAND RESORTS
REDANG ISLAND
Redang is an archipelago, comprising the main island, Pulau Redang,
and its associated islets, Pulau Pinang, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Kerengga
Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Paka Kecil, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau
Ling and Pulau Lima. Recognizing the importance of the exceptional
marine biodiversity and fragile marine ecosystems within the archipelago,
and the need for conservation, the waters surrounding the archipelago
have been gazetted as a Marine Park under the Establishment of Marine
Parks Malaysia Order 1994 (Fisheries Act 1995). The most magnetic
draw of Pulau Redang, besides its amazing marine flora and fauna,
marvelous beaches and crystal-clear glasslike waters, is its idyllic
and tranquil ambience, a laid-back island of exceptional charm and
beauty that reeks with romance and romanticism. Emerald coloured translucent
waters, sheltered by secluded coves and bays under a sunny blue sky,
are calm with gentle surf washing shores of powdery white and golden
sands sloping gradually into the sea. This remarkable phenomenon of
nature on Redang creates an ideal environment to swim or snorkel to
view the stunning proliferation of coral diversity.
PERHENTIAN ISLANDS
It comprises of two islands, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, and Pulau Perhentian
Besar, gazetted as a Marine Park. Over the past few years, the islands
have captured the hearts of many because of their immense natural
pristine beauty and amazing diversity of marine life. Fabulous living
corals grow profusely on the sea's floor, a perfect haven for snorkellers,
Scuba divers and underwater photographers. For those fortunate enough,
you may even catch a glimpse of dolphins and pilot whales playfully
swimming in the azure crystal-clear waters, normally in the months
of July and August. The months between November and February, being
the monsoon period, are best avoided as the seas get somewhat rough
and chalet operators tend to close for business and a welcome break
to the mainland. The main island offers fantastic stretches of white
powdery sands and numerous coves that guarantee privacy and tranquility.
The smaller island beckons those with an interest in observing rustic
fishing villages.
LAYANG LAYANG ISLAND
Layang Layang is a coral atoll in the middle of the South China Sea.
A sheer drop of 2000 metres around the rim of the atoll provides exhilarating
wall diving. Soft and hard coral of all types and sizes with excellent
visibility of 50-60 metres afford a majestic view of this gigantic
hanging garden. Famous residents and regular visitors include Napolean
wrasse, Manta ray, Hawk bill turtle, Dog Tooth Tuna, White Tip Reef
Sharks and the awesome schools of Hammerhead sharks. The resort is
open from March - November and closed for the months between January
and February.
SIPADAN ISLAND
Acknowledged as one of the best diving and unique spots in Southeast
Asia, Pulau Sipadan is located off the small coastal town of Semporna
on Sabah's eastern coast. Just 15 feet from the beach, the water turns
indigo blue as the sea drops abruptly to 2,850ft deep. It is rather
awe-inspiring. Myriad of colorful tropical fish swim in the warm water
near the surface whereas huge groupers nose about. Moreover, the water
gets so dark that one would not really know what lurks below. This
famous feature won Sipadan island a "Best Beach Dive in the World"
award in 1993.
The main attraction for divers is the rich and unique variety of corals
both soft and hard. Reef fish of every shape and hue can be found
in these waters. Colorful butterfly fishes, angel fishes, damsel fishes
of electric blue and bright orange colors inhabit the coral reefs,
thus adding to the splendor of the underwater havens. A beautiful
white-sand beach fringes Sipadan but the real beauty of this island
is in its waters. The season for diving is from mid-February to mid-December.
Visibility ranges from 60 feet to over 200 feet. Several dive spots
have even been identified and given exotic names after the variety
of corals and marine life that are unique to these spots. There is
the "Hanging Gardens", the "Barracuda Point",
and the exciting "Turtle Cavern".
TIOMAN ISLAND
Set like a glittering jewel amidst the South China Sea, Tioman Island,
the largest of a group of 64 volcanic islands, beckons the visitor
with its white beaches and crystal clear azure seas. A sense of excitement
and mystery pervades the island and the visitor will be enchanted
by the picturesque beauty of this tropical paradise. Populated by
friendly villagers who live an unhurried lifestyle, Tioman Island
has a way of making your troubles seem like a thousand miles away.
Considered one of the world's ten most beautiful islands. This volcanic
island has steep slopes of lush green vegetation and a multicolored
profusion of orchids and other tropical flowers. Stunning waterfalls
cascade down these tropical slopes and make their way down through
secluded sandy beaches to the clear blue waters and its iridescent
coral reefs. Untouched with its natural beauty, Tioman Island draw
thousands of tourist yearly to its beaches. Sun lovers and those who
are fascinated by sea shells will find the miles and miles of palm-fringed
beaches a sheer delight with their myriad varieties of these lovely
sea creatures. You can spend hours just languishing on the white pearly
beach, looking up the sun for the perfect tan. Popular beaches include
the ones around the villages of Tekek, Genting, and Salang. A walk
on one of these beaches at sunset is truly enchanting and will simply
take your breath away.
PANGKOR ISLAND
Largely inhabited by fisher-folk who live in fishing settlements scattered
along the coast, Pangkor, in stark contrast to Malaysia's fast-paced
progress remains a haven for those seeking to get away from the hustle
and bustle of city life. Here, visitors can bask in the sun on her
golden beaches and catch sights of fishing boats rocking gently on
calm blue waters. Situated 7km from historic Lumut town across the
Straits of Malacca, it has for centuries enthralled visitors with
her charming beauty, idyllic bays, pristine beaches, and vibrant tropical
forests. Hence it comes as no surprise that she has been a welcome
stopover for the sea weary, pirates, and adventurers in the old days.
In fact, it was at one time ruled by European conquerors such as the
Dutch and British yet her natural wonders have remained unscarred
and her environment as tranquil and harmonious as ever. Today's Pangkor
is a thriving tourist destination that does not reflect her turbulent
past.
LABUAN
Venture into the relics of World War II warships and modern era freighters.
Encrusted with lush colourful corals and an abundance of large fish,
these 4 wrecks offer great photo opportunities. Labuan is undoubtedly
the wreck diving capital of Asia. This triangular island of 92 square
kilometres is situated at the mouth of Brunei Bay, North Borneo. Most
of the wrecks are found in relatively shallow water to 35 metres and
are easily accessible by recreational scuba divers.
LANG TENGAH ISLAND
Pulau Lang Tengah is slowly gaining popularity due to its proximity
to Pulau Redang. Currently, there are only two resorts on this island.
Like other islands in Malaysia, it offers crystal clear water, white
sandy beaches, and lots of sun.
GEMIA ISLAND
Pulau Gemia is a tiny island off the coast of Terengganu in South
China Sea. This island has only one resort; it is also a designated
turtle santuary park.

PENYABONG ISLANDS
Penyabong and its surrounding islands is Malaysia's well kept secret.
With approximately 12 untouched and uninhibited tropical islands
surrounding the Penyabong coastline, this destination is rich with
colorful corals and exotic sea life. White sandy beaches line the
islands and crystal clear water allows you to have a clear look
at the activities that goes on underwater. Snorkel across corals
the size of a large dining table and look out for the abundance
shellfish littered on the seabed. This is also a perfect diving
spot where baby sharks and baby barracudas are frequently seen.
History has it that the HMS Tenet was sunk here by the Japanese
during WWII in front of Aceh Island, which is located approximately
70 feet under. During low tide, take a stroll across the shallow
waters between Pulau Sribuat and Pulau Sembilan and paddle by the
edge of the miniature mangroves.
LANGKAWI ISLAND
Langkawi, part of yet situated just off the coast of Kedah, is actually
made up of 99 islands. The largest of which is Pulau Langkawi, while
some of the others appear to be mere dots in the emerald green ocean
when viewed from the air. Langkawi offers natural attractions unsurpassed
by any other in the region. Those who love a tropical island holiday
and a place far from the maddening crowd will find their haven in
Langakawi Island. The outstanding natural landscapes of the Langkawi
Islands proclaim them a true tropical paradise. Besides its whites
sandy beaches and limestone hills, its lush vegetation filled with
exotic flora and fauna would attract natural lovers.
Pulau Rebak lies on the east side of Langkawi. It's a private island
consisting of 383 acres of lush pristine forest and has a spectacular
view of the Straits of Melaka, overlooking the Andaman Sea. It's
name is derived from the Rebak tree, found in abundance on the island.
On the South western tip of Pulau Rebak is Rebak Marina Resort.
PENANG ISLAND
A tropical island with luxurious beach resort, significant history,
superb local food. Penang, the Pearl of the Orient, is the most
culturally diverse East Asia holiday destination today. Lying at
the crossroads of great civilizations, Penang, more than any other
state in Malaysia, is the country's cultural melting pot. In the
early years of its founding, the island attracted people of all
races from seemingly all points of the compass. Penang today, like
most of its counterparts in the country, bears the mark of an early
history of successive foreign influences. From the early Indian
Civilization that took root in northern Malaya, to the Portuguese,
Dutch, and later the British who came to this part of the world
in search of spices and stayed on to participate in the lucrative
trade.
TURTLE ISLANDS
Located in the Sulu Sea 40 kilometres north of Sandakan is the most
important turtle breeding spot in all of South East Asia. It is
encompasse 1,740 hectares which compromises of three small islands;
Pulau Selingan, Pulau Bakkungan Kecil and Pulau Gulisan. Turtle
Island Park is the breeding ground of huge Green Turtles that lumber
ashore at night to lay their eggs. Pulau Selingan is the main nesting
area for the green turtles chelonia mydas, while the hawksbill turtles
seem particularly interested in the island of Gulisan. The islands
are built over shallow rocky shoals from coral shingle from the
surrounding reef on the fringes. They are covered with a variety
of plant life which includes mangrove, lantana, the yellow-flowered
sophora and the furry silver-leaved Tournefortia. However, the most
attractive event here is the turtles which come to nest on their
shores. Pulau Selingan is the main nesting area for the green turtles
chelonia mydas, while the hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys seem particularly
attracted to the shores of Pulau Gulisan. Both species lay their
eggs on these shores throughout the year although the best months
are between July to October. The islands were gazetted as Marine
Parks in 1977 primarily for the protection of these two species
in order to save them from extinction.
Some other islands that need mention are, Lankayan Island, Aur Island,
Kapas Island, Pemanggil Island, Kapalai Island, Pulau Daar, Papan
