MALAYSIA’S HILL RESORTS
Malaysia’S heartland is gifted by the beauty of its
natural landscape and the spectacular topographical formations.
From the scenic coastline to the mangrove swamps and deeper inland
into the sprawling rainforests right up its rugged mountains, the

range of the Peninsular and in Sabah and Sarawak on the island of
Borneo. Each of them possess their own unique charms. Mount Kinabalu,
with its looming granite massifs, represents the ultimate challenge,
while Fraser's Hill and Cameron Highlands with numerous jungle trails,
English cottages and gardens will appeal to those inclined towards
gentler pursuits.
Whatever one's choice, the jungle clad hills with an average temperature
of 16-21 degrees Celsius offer a cool, refreshing getaway from the
cities. Here ancient pine trees fringe hauntingly beautiful peaks
enshrouded in swirls of mist; delicate ferns heavy with crystals
of dew glisten like filigree silver; and temperate flowers in striking
shades of colors invite gasps of admiration. Whether you are going
for a day excursion or an extended stay, you will discover a holiday
in Malaysia's hill resorts to be an invigorating and pleasantly
soothing experience.
The backbone of Peninsular Malaysia is known as Banjaran Titiwangsa
or the Main Range. Running from the Malaysia-Thai border in the
north to the southern state of Negeri Sembilan, this central spine
effectively separates the eastern and western part of the Peninsula.
The highest peak in the range is Gunung Tahan (2,187m.) situated
in the central Malaysian state of Pahang. Other high peaks include
Gunung Jerai in Kedah, Bukit Larut in Perak and the legendary Gunung
Ledang (Mount Ophir) which straddles the Melaka-Johor border. In
Sabah, the most prominent highlands are the Crocker Range with average
heights ranging from 457 to 914 metres. Also situated in the range
are the three highest mountains in Malaysia: Mount Kinabalu (4,101m),
Gunung Trus Madi (2,597m) and Gunung Tambuyukon (2,579m) In Sarawak,
home to one of the world’s largest natural cave systems, the
two highest peaks are Gunung Murud (2,425m.) and Gunung Mulu (2,371m.)
CAMERON HIGHLANDS
Cameron Highlands (1,829metres) is the largest of the hill resorts
in Malaysia. It is located in Pahang. The highest peak is Gunung
Brinchang (2,032metres). Cameron Highlands is regarded as the
'Green Bowl' supplying its produce of cabbages, tomatoes, carrots,
green peppers and lettuce to major cities in Malaysia, and also
to Singapore. These are grown on terraced slopes. There are three
main towns, i.e. Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang, with the last
two being popular with visitors. Other tourist attractions include
tea plantations, tea factories, rose gardens, strawberry farms,
waterfalls, the busy market square at Brinchang, handicraft stores
and the Chin Swee Buddhist Temple. There are old colonial-style
houses that offer a glimpse of the past.The highland's 18-hole,
par-71 golf course is open to the public. Driving up to Cameron
Highlands is also a pleasure as many interesting stops along the
way. From Kuala Lumpur use the North South Expressway, exit at
Tapah Exit and turn left after paying the toll. Along the way,
you may stop at the Kuala Woh Forest Recreation Park there are
picnic areas and a hot spring. You will pass by a majestic waterfall,
Lata Iskandar. Accommodation facilities in Cameron Highlands include

FRASER’S HILL
Fraser's Hill nestles at 1,524 metres above sea level in the state
of Pahang. At the resort there are jungle trails, waterfalls, flower
nurseries and mushroom farms. The resort is also a popular venue
for bird watchers. It has 2 golf courses and are open to public.
The resort is about one and half hours away from Kuala Lumpur. The
road to the hill resort winds for about 35 km. Fraser's Hill provides
visitors with the cool mountain air, the abundance of luxuriant
vegetation, the peace and tranquility combined with other attractions
such as its stable of ponies, the nursery containing many exotic
flowers and the Jeriau Waterfalls. Other facilities include a children's
playground and a roller skating rink. The best accommodation facilities
on Fraser’s Hill is the Fraser’s Silverpark Resort which
is located on the highest peak of Fraser’s Hill.
BUKIT LARUT
Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill) was founded in 1888 and is Malaysia's
oldest hill resort. It rises to a height of 1,035 metres, just
3km from Taiping, Perak. Coffee and tea were grown on an experimental
basis in the past, giving rise to the Chinese name 'kopi sua'
The resort, however, makes a suitable choice for those wanting
to enjoy peace amid a cool scenery Getting up to the resort is
via a land rover from the base of the hill. No private vehicles
are allowed up the hill.

| GUNUNG
JERAI
Jerai Gunung Jerai (1,200metres) is relatively unknown as a hill
resort but this highest peak in the northern region offers a worthwhile
and interesting visit as the archaeological site of Lembah Bujang
is situated close by. Attractions on the mountain include a Forestry
Museum and the Sungai Teroi Forest Recreation Park with jungle
trails and waterfalls. Gunung Jerai is located 34 km south of
Alor Setar. Access to the peak is from Guar Cempedak from Route
1. Jeeps ply the 13 km route to the resort or you may drive up.
BUKIT TINGGI
Located in the state of Pahang in Peninsular Malaysia, one of
the latest holiday resorts is Bukit Tinngi.It is located a mere
40 minutesjourney time from the commercial capital of KualaLumpur.
GENTING HIGHLANDS
Genting Highlands, only fifty kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, is
the most developed hill resort in Malaysia. Genting Highlands
offers all of the excitement, luxury, and entertainment of an
international resort destination. There are international dinner
shows and discos, while the world-class Casino de Genting offers
Blackjack, Baccarat, Keno, French Bull, Roulette, Tai Sai and
slot machines. Genting Highlands can be reached from Kuala Lumpur
via the faster Karak Highway or the slower old Pahang Road (Route
68). The latter passes by Mimaland, which may be a good place
to stop by before proceeding to Genting Highlands. The Genting
Express Bus leaves every hour from the Puduraya Bus Station in
Kuala Lumpur.
MOUNTAINS OF SABAH AND SARAWAK
Gunung Kinabalu, one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia
at 4095m is located in Kinabalu Park, Sabah. It is accessible
to all trekkers. The Summit Trail leading to Low's Peak is equipped
with clear paths and ropes to climb steep rocky sections. Exotic
plant life such as the Necklace Orchid can be seen on the climb.
Gunung Trusmadi is reacheable by a difficult week long climb through
mossy forest, steep hills and rain swollen rivers. Upon reaching
the summit, you will be rewarded with one of the best views of
Gunung Kinabalu and a chance to see the remarkably large and rare
pitcher plants only found on the ridges of Trusmadi.
Other mountains can be climbed in two days as long as you are
fit enough to tackle the steep terrain. Gunung Santubong is one
of the most popular mountains in Sarawak with its spectacular
view of Kuching. Guides will be needed on the tough trek to Sarawak's
Gunung Penrissen. The 60 meter vertical scramble to the top can
be completed in a day or two. The long uphill walk to the sandstone
summit of Gunung Mulu takes four days and passes through primary
jungle, swampy patches and clumps of colorful rhododendrons before
the white clouds disperse to reveal the massive limestone outcropping
of Gunung Api just across the valley.
